Behance

As technology continues to develop and become intertwined with our lives, creating an influential niche in human culture, we see more and more people trying to connect with each other and break down physical barriers through the Internet. With the launch of popular social networking websites such as MySpace in August 2003 and Facebook in February 2004, social networking websites have grown at a phenomenal rate, becoming part of our daily discussions and lifestyle. We see the communication and networking via the Internet being used for all sorts of interests and hobbies. One of the communities that has greatly benefited from the Internet and social networking are artists. There are several art and design websites, such as Deviant Art, but Behance was one of the first to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity.

In 2006, the creators of Behance wanted to solve the problem of talented artists unable to find opportunities by putting the “control into the hands of countless creative professionals suffering from inefficiency, disorganization, and careers at the mercy of bureaucracy”. Behance is a platform for creative individuals and teams to showcase and discover creative work, an online portfolio for professionals across multiple industries such as photography, graphic design, architecture, industrial design, and illustration. The website does not use complicated technology or code, but rather was born from a simple idea that wanted to bring people together and act as a way for people to find talent and opportunities.
Behance continues to expand and inspire creative professionals to pursue their dreams and goals without having to deal with the hassle of promoting themselves. In addition to the online portfolio service, Behance has also worked with large organizations such as AIGA, Adweek, and MTV and schools such as Rhode Island School of Design to produce galleries and other collaborations of creative work. They have also been working together with LinkedIn to enable portfolio display options on LinkedIn profiles. Due to the material on Behance being formatted to the design of Behance’s website, professionals are also given the option to sync their Behance accounts with ProSite which is a personal portfolio site builder. Aside from the services and products they provide, Behance also has other projects that consist of conferences. The 99% is Behance’s think tank and they are devoted to discovering the best practices of the world’s most creative and productive people. Behance continuously works and fights for the creative professional.

Behance has already shown much potential in regards to future ideas and collaborations to continue helping artists all over the world. In relation to the WWW, websites like Behance and other online communities hold great opportunities for all kinds of new projects. It is a business that was started by two men passionate about art, but Behance has become a social movement of sorts to bring more recognition to creative careers and a place for ideas to thrive and artists to receive feedback from fellow artists.
